Richard is a trumpet player and jazz composer. As a young member of the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, he gained valuable experience in jazz and after leaving the Leeds College of Music in 1980 he became a founding member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra, performing with Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, Anthony Braxton and Vince Mendoza. Richard later became a member of the Mike Gibbs Band and participated in the recording 'By the Way'.

In 2000, Richard released an album 'From Here to There', featuring music for large and small ensembles. As a composer, Richard was commissioned by the Manchester Jazz Festival to write 'New Futures', an eight part piece to celebrate the new young jazz players in the Manchester region alongside more established players. As part of the Manchester Commonwealth Games celebrations, he was also commissioned to write 'Culture Shock', a six part piece combining South African, North American and European musical influences. The suite was performed by the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra alongside three South African bands.

Richard recently took over the position of Musical Director at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester and also directs the jazz orchestra for Bolton Music Service.
